The Homes & Heritage
Tour continues this year with
ten homes within the Promise’ Land area. Many of
the homes contain furniture, art and wonderful
photographs and stories of the families and their
love of Morehead City. These turn of the century
cottages and homes are found on Evans,
Shackleford and Shepard Streets in Morehead City.
Homes featured on the Tour are renovated or
remodeled cottages, some still reflecting the
heritage of the Promise’ Land.
The Tour captures the history of eastern North
Carolina families who were vital to the development
of North Carolina. The homes have been handed
down to sons and daughters who in turn share the
memories with their children and grandchildren. This
year the history of the Promise' Land and downtown
Morehead City will be highlighted with descendants
of the area sharing the history and stories of the
homes and land, reflecting the way it was.
Long-time Morehead City resident, the late Floyd
Chadwick, stated the truth about the town's oldest
houses which stand in the center of the peninsula
away from the low-lying shores of Bogue Sound and
Calico Creek, “Nobody wanted to live on the water
unless they had to.” The opposite is true today where
the new homes or newly renovated homes on the
water are in demand in the Promise' Land.
